Library service begins in the Town of Lamont

Residents of Lamont annexed to the Whitman County Library District in November, approving the measure by a whopping 97% majority. With the annexation of Lamont, library service is now available to all Whitman County residents. Thanks to the generosity of The Avista Foundation, The Friends of the Library and Mayor Mike Thomas, online and delivery services are set to begin immediately instead of waiting until 2014, which would be standard.

Because the process of collecting taxes after annexation takes some time, library officials had hoped the city would pay for the interim year of service. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible due to the budgetary challenges the community faces in trying to complete construction of their library and public restroom facility.

That is when Library Director Kristie Kirkpatrick turned to Paul Kimmel from Avista. “Paul and Avista have been such strong advocates for our libraries and our local communities, I just knew they would help if they could,” says Kirkpatrick. The Friends of the Library stepped in to cover the remaining costs so the only missing link in the service chain was a delivery driver.

That is where Lamont Mayor Mike Thomas stepped in, volunteering to perform the weekly ritual of emptying the book return and delivering the items to the nearest county library branch, which happened to be St. John.

Residents of Lamont can now obtain library cards from any branch of Whitman County Library or at an upcoming community potluck where library representatives will be on hand making cards and answering questions. Initially, Lamont residents are invited to use any of the library’s 14 branches, to request items online with direct mail delivery as an option. Children’s programs are being planned for late spring with the hope that service will eventually take place in the new library.

Residents with questions about Lamont Library service, joining the Lamont Friends of the Library or assisting in the completion of the Lamont Library should contact Clancy Pool, Whitman County Library branch services manager at 509-397-4366.
