Board of Trustees Meeting

Colfax Branch
March 27, 2007
4:00 p.m.

Present:   Becky Dickerson, John Aune, Teresa Myott, Jon Kehne, Peggy Bryan, and Kristie Kirkpatrick.

Jon Kehne, board chair, called the meeting to order at 4:07.

The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed.  Becky made a motion to accept the minutes, John  Aune seconded and the motion carried.

The board wished Becky a happy birthday and presented her with cake and a Friends of WCL cookbook. James and Don, the library’s technology staff assisted in the lighting of the candles.

Kristie introduced Daquarii Rock, who joined the meeting at 4:12.  Dacquarii, Project Access’s grant coordinator explained the project’s goal to collaborate community education classes and services for seniors throughout rural Whitman and Latah counties.  The grant purchased books pertaining to seniors for WCL, Neill Public Library and Latah County Library District.  Leslee Miller joined the meeting at 4:27.  A brief discussion of the grant followed.

Peggy reviewed the Financial Reports; Budget Report through February 28, 2007, March Vouchers and Account Balances Reports.

Kristie reviewed circulation reports for February, noting that overall circulation was up nearly 5000.  Digital measures and Database activity continue to rise.  Colton, Farmington, Garfield, St. John and Uniontown had increases in circulation.  Endicott and Malden saw sizeable decreases in circulation.

Kristie mentioned little progress has been made on the elevator project.  The information she received at the Rural Library Retreat indicates that we need to do an in-dept assessment of the project goals and design before pursuing any further funding.

Kristie announced that the Library Supporter of the month of March was Sara Thompson from Endicott.  Sara has made donations to WCL of her time, a TV with VCR & DVD player, etc.  Kristie thanked and praised Sara for her contributions to the Endicott branch. Angela Broeckel of Lacrosse was selected as April Supporter of the Month.

Peggy presented an updated list of the Friends of WCL.

Kristie expressed regret that Marie Dynkoski, Palouse Branch Manager, resigned. She took a position at the Pullman Chamber Office.  Marie has done a great job in the Palouse Library and will be missed.

Kristie announced that Catalina Flores was recently hired for circulation in Colfax.  We’re pleased to have Catalina join our staff.

Kristie and Becky discussed Library Legislative Day on March 8th.  They both felt their efforts were worthwhile and enjoyed their visits with legislators.

Peggy discussed the WCL levy rate drop from .0005 to .0004954 affecting the library’s income.  She discussed the impact on the library budget and that the levy rate will continue to drop each year as a result of I-747.

Kristie announced that WCL has applied for two One Book Grants for $10,000.  One project funds a countywide Summer Reading program for 2008 with the Palouse Science Center and giving a bug book to every summer reader.  The other project with “Everybody Reads the Same Book” in collaboration with regional libraries to beef up the promotion and number of author appearances.

Kristie discussed the Rural Library Retreat, noting that Peggy, Sheri, Theresa Lautenslauger (Rosalia Branch Manager) and Debbie Gilbertson (Garfield Branch Manager) attended with her.  The retreat was sponsored by the Gates Foundation and included a wonderful grant-writing workshop.

The board discussed having the next meeting on Tuesday, April 24 following the Friends Appreciation Lunch at noon.  Leslee made a motion that the meeting be changed and John seconded.  The motion passed and the next meeting will follow the lunch at approximately 1:10 p.m.

With no further business, the Board adjourned at 5:06.
