Board of Trustees Meeting
July 15, 2008
Present: Rebecca Dickerson, Leslee Miller, John Aune, Teresa
Myott, Kristie Kirkpatrick and Peggy Bryan.
Leslee Miller, board chair, called the meeting to order at
5:40 p.m. after a tour of Endicott and LaCrosse branch
libraries. Leslee asked for additions or modifications to the
agenda. There were none. The minutes of the previous meeting
were reviewed. Becky Dickerson made a motion to accept the
minutes and Teresa Myott seconded. The motion passed.
Peggy reviewed the Financial Reports; Budget, Account
Balances Reports and July vouchers #9321-9370 totaling
$24,320.59. Board members signed to authorize payment. Kristie
reviewed circulation reports for May, with a decrease in
circulation statistics of 407 system-wide. The report showed
that Albion, Endicott, Malden, Palouse, St. John and Tekoa had
increases in their circulation. There were significant increases
in online usage with website visits up by 10,000 and online
catalog searches up by 131,000. She then reviewed the
circulation reports for June, with an increase in circulation
statistics of 614 system-wide. Branches with increases in
circulation were Albion, Colton, Endicott, Farmington, Lacrosse,
Oakesdale, Tekoa, Uniontown and Colfax. Attendance was down at
programs for kids by 400. There were increases in online usage
with website visits up by 7500, online catalog searches up by
135,000 and online catalog transactions up by 700.
CONTINUED BUSINESS: Kristie reported on the progress with the
Headquarters building upgrades. Kristie noted that fundraising
is continuing, with $10,000 from Avista and $4,000 commitment
from Farm Credit Services. Kristie noted that Klaveano's sent a
letter of support to NW Farm Credit Services and thanked them
for their support. The Bank of America application was recently
submitted. She is working on the application to Inland Northwest
Foundation, noting that a member of their board recently donated
to our building fund and encouraged us to apply.
NEW BUSINESS: Peggy presented an updated list of the Friends
of the Library and the Renovation Donor List, noting several new
The library supporter for the months of June and July were
Shirley Morasch and Ruth Dorman. Shirley was presented with the
award during the tour of the Endicott Branch Library. Kristie
thanked Shirley for her long time support of the library as a
past employee and for her contributions to the Endicott Branch
recently. Ruth Dorman was presented with the award at her home
in LaCrosse before the board meeting. Kristie thanked Ruth for
her support of the library. She noted her donations of books and
the LaCrosse Cemetery List, her love of children and community
Kristie reported on the Washington Library Director's
meeting, who meet twice a year. Nancy Pearl was a presenter that
inspired the Director's to seek staff training cooperatively. A
discussion on green buildings and landscaping was very
informative. Library standards among libraries were discussed
and some directors encouraged the group to proceed, setting
performance benchmarks for which libraries could strive. The
Early Learning Public Library Partnership was also discussed.
Washington State is leading the way nationally in this
cooperative effort among libraries and Kristie reported that
good progress is being made, including a meeting with potential
funding agencies including Boeing, Gates Foundation and others.
Leslee discussed the Uniontown City Council meeting that took
place regarding the relocation of the Library within the
building. Many community members attended. The City Council
decided to do a space analysis before making any decision. The
council also discussed seeking grants to obtain a proper
Kristie reported that the November ballot will include the
Town of Garfield annexation to the library district. An
information sheet was passed out that will be distributed to
Kristie discussed the issues facing the Town of Malden paying
for library service. They are fundraising this year, hoping to
raise money for library service for 2009. Malden is exploring
options to annex to the library district in the future.
Kristie expressed her appreciation to Clancy for all of her
efforts with the new St. John Library building. She asked the
board to sign a letter of commendation.
Kristie noted the library website improvements and thanked
Don for his efforts. The photography at the top of the page is
by artist Jerry McCullum from Palouse. His goal is to spread
appreciation of art throughout the community. He is generously
displaying some of his photography at the Colfax Branch too.
There will no meeting on August, as per policy. The next
meeting will be Tuesday, September 16th at 4 p.m. in Colfax. The
2009 Budget will be on the agenda.
With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 6:35.
