Whitman County Library
Board of Trustees Meeting
Colfax Branch
May 11, 2010

Present: Becky Dickerson, Jon Kehne, Teresa Myott, Leslee Miller, Kristie Kirkpatrick, Peggy Bryan and Larry Kom.

The board toured the Colfax library renovation prior to the meeting, viewing the progress with Larry Kom.

Becky Dickerson, board vice-chair, called the meeting to order at 4:25 P.M. on the second floor of the U.S. Bank building, adjacent to the library. Larry Kom reviewed his written report for the Board as related to the Colfax renovation. A copy of that report is attached. Larry left the meeting following his report. The minutes of the previous meetings were reviewed. Leslee made a motion to accept the minutes and Teresa seconded. The motion carried.

Peggy presented the financial reports. She presented vouchers #10495-10543 totaling $27,020.84 from the general fund and vouchers #1020-1022 totaling $16,607.95 from the construction fund. Board members signed, affirming their approval the payments. She also reviewed the construction fund deposits and expenditures to date and reviewed the funding sources for the safety renovation project. Kristie thanked Peggy for her efforts.

Kristie presented the circulation reports for April. She noted that Colfax circulation is down only one third from last year. Computer use, holds filled, kids attendance, website visits and online catalog transactions had significant increases. Database usage is down 6000, which Kristie attributed to the drop in Bridges usage as Erica is spending more time with WORC and less in the schools this spring.

Kristie announced there have been no new developments in Hamilton Building/Art Education Center. She spoke with County Commissioner Greg Partch who was supportive of agencies acquiring neighboring properties whenever possible, noting it is a good deal for agencies. She is sitting on this at the present until time permits to pursue or other developments occur.

Kristie announced that the Smoking Papaís in Garfield is the supporter of the month for May. Two Old Gals was the April supporter of the month. Board members commented that they liked the ads in the Gazette for supporter of the month.

Kristie announced the Annual Staff Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 18 at HillRay Plaza. She presented the agenda for the training day and invited board members to attend any, or all, of the meeting. An RSVP for lunch is needed by May 12 though.

Kristie reported that a Lamont library/restroom building was approved for funding with .09 economic development funds. The town plans to construct a metal building and have been working with library staff to design the library area. Lamont will seek contract service from WCL once a building is complete.

Kristie reported that she is visiting the Endicott Library Wednesday morning, meeting with city officials and experts to determine mold issues. She hopes to assist the city with a USDA grant to fix the public safety issues in the library, including mold abatement and air filtration. Endicott is high-priority for USDA projects because of their low-income level. Because of other projects with the agency, Endicottís application process should also be simpler.

Kristie reported that the annual Penny Drive has totaled nearly $4000 over the past five years. She discussed the great efforts that Vickiís Daycare in supporting the Penny Drive by raising over $1000 over the years. The board signed a letter thanking Vicki and her daycare kids for their generous support.

Kristie shared an article that she submitted to the Daily News recently. She noted statistics demonstrating how libraries are changing and that they are busier than ever.

The next meeting will be June 15 at 4 p.m. in Colfax. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:01.
